pandora
Pandora is a multisensory light fixture designed to transform any space with calming rainfall sounds and a shimmering water effect. Its sleek, minimalist form doubles as a small display shelf, crafted entirely from warm cherry hardwood. At its core, a rotating tube of acrylic stones refracts light into a signature, ever-moving glow that blends function, atmosphere, and quiet reflection.
Ideation
This project was an opportunity to explore creating an experience using light refraction within a space. The visuals I was drawn to were the way light refracts through water and reflects on the underside of a low hanging bridge.
Sketching focused on a more subtle form, where the light source was hidden from view. The final idea involved a rotating material that the light would be pushed through, creating a shifting projected display.
prototyping
Material testing was conducted to identify the best material for creating the desired light refraction effect.
A tube fixture was made that would rotate within the light’s structure and contain the refracted material. Overall form was then tested with a cardboard prototype.
Final product
The final prototype was made from cherry hardwood, with the internal structure running on a small step motor and gear to continuously rotate the tube of material.
Results were the intended effect, a shifting projection of refracted light that could cast on a surface behind the light. The box form allowed for use as a display or small shelf without obstruction the light itself.
